Persian Rugs and Carpets: The Fabric of Life

This book shows the vast range and quality of carpets woven in Persia from about 1850 to 1980. In addition, there is a discussion of rugs woven in countries or areas adjacent to Persia itself, particularly those rugs that either fell or fall into the Persian geographical or cultural orbit, Caucasian weavings, Turkish and Hereke silk rugs and certain weavings that have strong Persian and Islamic influences. Frankly I was disappointed. I found the quality of imagery a bit lacking and some of the inclusions inexplicable. I thought the technical aspects of the text was okay but would have appreciated a more thorough discussion of chemical v natural dies, imagery comparisons etc. The coverage on tribal rugs was limited. Having said that, I gave the book to a friend, who loves it – despite the odd carpets of the Queen etc.

I must admit that the steep price made me hesitate. the book went into, and out of, my cart a few times.

However, it is important to remember that great books cannot be judged solely by cost.

In the final analysis, this book will remind you, every time you open it, that your money has been VERY well spent.
