PLEASE HELPHello, I recently purchased a Roman Gladiator ring off of ebay and am trying to further verify the authenticity of the ring, the value of the ring and the date if too possible! The Certificate Of Authenticity they sent me seemed as nothing more than a fancy receipt and that is why im seeking further information on the item! Here is the Ebay posting they had placed from ebay dealer Cameleoncoins: Roman bronze Gladiator ring with a large depiction of Sol Invictus (the Roman sun god) on the Bezel, for protection in the arena and 12 kill marks etched by the gladiator beneath the bezel to commemorate each kill. The very center of the ring has a star-burst symbol. This is one of the several variations which depicts Sol Invictus, the sun god. The diamond shaped image surrounding Sol Invictus, represents the arena. Just outside of the arena, there are a series of lines surrounding the arena which represent palm leaves. Palm leaves and olive branches were symbols commonly used to represent brotherhood between Gladiators and Soldiers. Gladiators would traditionally place their kill marks on one of three places on the ring. Downward markings on the band, such as the markings on this ring, lines across the width of the band, the top of the bezel, and the third place was beneath the bezel. Gladiator rings of this high grade and preservation, and with kill marks, are becoming very difficult to obtain Your help in this matter would be very much appreciated, thank you very much, Brian Walker Submit your estimate of worth |

Hi Brian,
That's nice roman artifact. Although, it appears to be from the correct area judging from the appearance of the patina, I highly doubt it belonged to a gladiator. Gladiators were slaves in Roman times and most likely didn't own many possessions. I would value your roman ring around $50-75 dollars and would place its date of manufacture around 100 A.D. |
