PLEASE HELPI have two identicle Black Americana figurines of a child sitting on a bale of cotton eating watermelon. I've done hours of research and found very little and nothing exactly like these. My grandma traced over the carved writing on the bottom with ink. I can't make out everything but the part I can read says, Army, New Orleans. Oct 1957. I would love any information regarding history and value of this pair. Thanks -Star Submit your estimate of worth |

Hi Star, I don't support their purpose, but the stereotype of blacks eating watermelon was probably created during the antebellum era to degrade black people: http://www.authentichistory.com/diversity/african/3-coon/5-chickwatermelon/ Your black figuries are worth around $50-100 dollars. |
